When you hit that wall where you realize you have added on a few extra pounds you look in the mirror like most people and say I'd like to lose some weight. But the reality is you want to burn fat not muscle. When you stop and really think about it then you realize it is only common sense. Losing weight is just tht.. losing bodyweight. The problem is that at the end of losing weight if you follow a bad plan like fasting or something along those lines you might end up looking like a tortured pow. Noone wants that look. You want to look like a movie star that has a group of personal trainers at your disposal. Heck better yet maybe someone with great genetics that does not have to even worry about it.

To get that perfect shape you want to burn fat not muscle. This will involve changes in what you eat, how you eat, and how often you eat. You need to make sure and get plenty of protein while dieting in order to preserve muscle mass. That is one of the biggest keys. All the while you still need to make sure you watch your total calorie intake in order to get below your maintanence level and into fat burning mode. The way you workout will be a factor. In order to preserve lean body mass you should incorporate some form of resistance training or weight lifting. This is important even for women. This does not mean you have to lift a ton of weight and look like a bodybuilder. Just get in some training to maintain lean body mass.
